Self-control, revealed preference and consumption choice

چکیده
We provide a time-consistent model that addresses the preference reversals that motivate the time-inconsistency literature. The model subsumes the behavior generated by the time-inconsistency approach in finite settings but, unlike the time-inconsistent models, allows for self-control. This paper provides a brief summary of theoretical results shown elsewhere [Gul and Pesendorfer, Econometrica 69 (2001) 1403; Econometrica, (2002), in press; Rev. Econ. Stud. (2002), in press] and contrasts the predictions and welfare implications of our model and the time-inconsistent β−δ model. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Merging two variables (observational learning and self-talk), is not preference one variable evermore
Observing a model let learners to make a plan of action that can be used for learning motor skills. Moreover, self-talk is a conversation that performers use it either apparently or secretly in order to think about their performance and reinforce it. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of observational learning, self-talk and combination of both on boy’s perform...
متن کاملDemand for Self Control: A model of Consumer Response to Programs and Products that Moderate Consumption
Is it better to apply effort to increase personal consumption, or control what one wants? The model presented here provides a characterization of demand for self control, namely, its responsiveness to price and risk. Unlike most other models of self control, the model does not identify self control with time inconsistency or rely on the multiple-selves framework. Self control refers to resource...
متن کاملDemand for Self Control: A Model of Consumer Response to Programs and Products Designed to Moderate Consumption
Given the availability of products and programs designed to moderate desire for consumption, how would a utility maximizing consumer choose to allocate her budget between ordinary consumption and a self control technology that limits how much consumption she wants? Faced with this trade-off between hedonic pleasure from ordinary consumption and effective, yet costly, reduction of desire, the mo...
متن کاملSelf-Control through Second-Order Preferences
We propose to model the exercise of self-control as the second-order choice of one’s own choice dispositions (first-order preferences over outcomes). This choice is governed by second-order preferences over first-order preferences and final outcomes. Specifically, the paper studies the revealed preference implications of the second-order preference model for ex-ante choices among opportunity se...
متن کاملA Comprehensive Approach to Revealed Preference Theory∗
We develop a version of Afriat’s Theorem that is applicable to a variety of choice environments, beyond the setting of classical consumer theory. This allows us to devise tests for rationalizability in the context of choice data on lotteries, contingent consumption, and intertemporal consumption. We also establish a version of Richter’s Theorem that characterizes the strict rationalizability of...
